“NSOs Professional Independence: Threats and Responses”

Prior to the 2018 IAOS-OECD Conference “Better Statistics for Better Lives” that will take place on 19-21 September 2018 in Paris, France, the International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS) is organising a Special Meeting on “NSOs Professional Independence: Threats and Responses”.
This Special Meeting will discuss at a high level the challenges to the independence of Official Statistics by analysing concrete cases, governance arrangements and the role of the international statistical community.
Professional independence of NSOs is a subject of the utmost importance for official statistics and we have decided to dedicate a full day to highlight it. The meeting will consist on three main sessions and a book presentation by the Inter-American Development Bank (IDB):
9:30–11:00 hrs – The Challenges to the Independence of Official Statistics: Some concrete cases.
11:00-11:30 hrs – Coffee break
11:30–13:00 hrs – Institutional Governance and Support to Statistical Independence
13:00–13:30 hrs – Who cares to know? The Political Economy of Statistical Capacity (Book presentation by the IDB)
13:30–15:00 hrs – Lunch break.
15:00–16:30 hrs – Discussion: The Role of the International Statistical Community
The Special Meeting will take place one day before the 2018 IAOS-OECD Conference (Tuesday, 18 September 2018) at the OECD Conference Centre and it is open to all people attending it.
