Workshop on Governance of Statistical Systems

Organiser: International Association for Official Statistics (IAOS)
Venue: Santiago, Chile, ECLAC headquarters, Avda. Dag Hammarskjold 3477, Vitacura;
Celso Furtado Conference room
Date: 19 October 2010

The aim of the workshop is to share good practices and to discuss challenges in governing and sustaining a modern statistical system. Directors General and one representative of top management from each Latin American and Caribbean National Statistical Institute (NSI), and from a few NSIs outside the region and some representatives of international organisations, will be invited to exchange their experiences. The workshop will be by invitation only. The list of invitees was prepared by the organizing committee, in cooperation with the main beneficiaries of the workshop - the NSIs of Latin American and Caribbean countries - and the IAOS Executive Committee. The short papers and presentations will be available well in advance in order to give enough time for participants of the workshop to prepare for a productive discussion.

 In the first two sessions of the programme (shown below), invited speakers will have 10 minutes for presentation; invited discussants will have 15 minutes; and 45 minutes will be available for general discussion. In the third session, panelists will have 5-7 minutes each for opening remarks.

 The papers and presentations will be in English and Spanish, with simultaneous interpretation provided.

Workshop programme:

The workshop programme will deal with the three important pillars of any good statistical system: (1) legal and institutional framework; (2) governance of a statistical system and relationships with stakeholders; and (3) challenges in building and sustaining a modern statistical system.
